Born: London, grew up in Belgium

Education: University of London from the age of 16

Hobbies: History of anaesthesia

Achievements: Developed the ‘Fink non rebreathing valve’ for children which allowed single-handed assisted respiration.

Developed the vallecular extension airway by adding a Macintosh blade tip to a Waters airway, which worked well in endentulous patients when mask anaesthesia was common.

Secretary of the International Association for the Study of Pain.

Received the ASA Excellence in Research Award.

Interesting facts: He spent some time in South Africa but emigrated to the USA in the 1950s as he was opposed to apartheid.
