Alexander Macmillan

After it was sold by the Jodrell family in 1889, the house was bought by Alexander Macmillan (1818-1896), one of the founders of the Macmillan publishing house. With his brother Daniel, Macmillan published Lewis Carroll, Charles Kingsley and Tennyson, as well as educational, philosophical, classical and scientific works.

The Conservative Prime Minister, Sir Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) was Daniel’s grandson and Alexander’s great nephew.
